“Meltemi” Linux based open-source OS for Low-End Nokia Phones?
Well, as you know MeeGo has been already swallowed up in the new Tizen project lead by Intel and Samsung, Here is another scoop- WSJ has revealed that Nokia is now working on a new Linux based open-source OS for its low-end handsets, codenamed “Meltemi”.
Since from last couple of years Nokia has been challenged by a growing number of Chinese brands handsets in developing countries like India. So there is a possibility that Nokia could release this OS to deliver cost-effectiveness that cheap smartphones require, together satisfying the increasingly sophisticated demands of low end audiences in emerging markets.
Right now there is no official words from Nokia on this news. Meltemi is not new, it made its first appearance in an internal Nokia memo, uncovered in April and also heard in an internal leaked video of Mr. Elop (The SeaRay one). Anyway “Meltemi” is the Greek word for dry summer winds that blow across the Aegean Sea from the north.
