Nokia now allow FTP access to Symbian Foundation contents

Concerning large amount of requests for access to Symbian Foundation contents, Nokia now grated the FTP Access to Symbian’s current Platform source code, PDKs, documentation etc. hosted by the Symbian Foundation.

Straight from Symbian Blog:

“We have had many requests for access to the FTP provided by Symbian Foundation. This FTP allows access to current Platform source code that was hosted by the Symbian Foundation as well as PDKs, documentation, etc.

Please note that we cannot provide login details for this FTP. To obtain a login, you must send a request to contact@symbian.org.

We are still working hard behind the scenes to make available material on this site and more details will be updated here in the near future.

If you are looking for application developer documentation and kits, then take a look at the Symbian resources over at our sister site Forum Nokia. And while you are there why not discover and learn about developing applications for Qt, Nokia’s application development environment of choice.”

The news emerges through the new Symbian Blog (hosted by Nokia). The blog also reports that Nokia is working behind the scenes to make more of SF material available through this new Symbian Blog – http://symbian.nokia.com/ .

Symbian gets a New Home at Nokia!

Today Symbian gets a new home at Nokia “ Symbian.Nokia.Com “.This new site will be the central point delivering news and updates on further development of the new Symbian.

This is the first step of Nokia towards the development of new Symbian. According to Head of Open Source operations Symbian Smartphones, Nokia Petra Söderling – “During the first quarter of 2011, Nokia will review the existing platform documentation, wiki content, and platform development tools and publish relevant ones through this website. Until then, the Symbian Foundation will deliver historical information and the existing open source platform code via an FTP server until March 31, 2011.”

Symbian Foundation is winding up!

Symbian Foundation is accelerating their process of shutting down. Today they announced that they are shutting down all of their websites by December 17th.

According to SF post :

Recently, we announced that the Symbian Foundation will be transitioning to a licensing body. In practise this will mean a reduction in the day-to-day operations of the Foundation by the end of the year.

As a result, we expect our websites will be shutting down on 17th December. We are working hard to make sure that most of the content accessible through web services (such as the source code, kits, wiki, bug database, reference documentation & Symbian Ideas) is available in some form, most likely on a DVD or USB hard drive upon request to the Symbian Foundation. Preparing this content will take some time, hence it will not be distributable before 31st January 2011. A charge may be levied for media and shipping.

All of the websites hosted by the Symbian Foundation will be affected by this change:

Symbian repositories will cease to be available after the shut down of the developer.symbian.org site (and its Japanese and Chinese equivalents ),2010. If you are looking for Symbian source codes, we encourage you to download it before 17 December 2010.
