The software giant Microsoft Corp. is close to an agreement to buy Skype Technologies for between $7 billion and $8 billion. This deal will provide Microsoft a key communications tool, giving at instant millions of users around the world using Skype service. Right now it’s not clear how Microsoft plans to integrate Skype capabilities into its existing communications tools. But Microsoft team is working on new product known as Lync, which delivers complete presence, instant messaging, conferencing and enterprise voice capabilities through a single, easy-to-use interface that is consistent across PC, browser, and mobile device. Skype could strengthen that offering.

The update brings support for new Symbian^3 phones like the Nokia N8, C7 and E5, featuring new SILK technology, a high quality audio codec, which should help make sure your calls are crystal clear, even when you’re on a low-bandwidth connection.

Connectivity Diagnostics Test – With a couple of clicks the application connects to a selected access point and performs a diagnostics test. In case of any problems with the connectivity, you are informed about it with troubleshooting tips.

Following features for more advanced users and developers:

Connection Observer – This graphical presentation of WLAN and packet data connectivity and events releated to it helps you to analyze WLAN networks and how roaming is performed e.g. when using VoIP. The gathered data can be stored into a .csv file for further analysis. More advanced users and application developers can also capture the IP traffic of the device into a pcap file.

Ping Utility – This utility helps you to perform ICMP-Echo ping tests to a given hostname or IP address. With this feature it is easy to test IP connection to a selected destination.
