The Nokia N900 : First Impressions

The first thing comes after looking at  Nokia N900 is – “WOW” seriously. The N900 is Nokia’s first device running Maemo 5 -a Linux-based OS & after using it for 4 days we want to share our first impression, So get ready and read on……!

The first thing you will notice on N900 is its looks – that’s how we believe N900 got dandy look & that’s not all, when we get its inner specs we are IMPRESSED. Massively running Maemo 5 OS  in ARM TI OMAP 3430 Cortex-A8 600 MHz processor with  256 Mb of Ram, OpenGL ES 2.0 support and 32 GB of Internal space, this thing  Injects Power to Mobility.

So lets start with Likings:

  • Great built quality, high quality material used.
  • Maemo 5 OS brings Stability.
  • Cortex-A8 600 MHz processor gives power & processing.
  • 256 Mb of RAM makes multitasking as easy & smooth.
  • 32 Gb of Space – Gives peace of mind – just install what you want: Movies, Songs or App whatever you like.
  • Large 3.5″ TFT screen is awesome, perfect for Internet Browsing & watching movies- even works well in direct sunlight.

  • N900 support USB charging via it’s microUSB port.
  • Integrated A-GPS works great.
  • Integrated FM transmitter works well.
  • Speakers are ok and are same that in Nokia N97.
  • Support multiple Panorama desktop up to 4 supported, gives more device personalization.
  • Widgets to Life up N900′s  desktops- Supporting Contact Shortcuts, Web bookmarks,  Application Shortcuts & more.
  • Full QWERTY tactile keyboard with well arranged soft keys & shortcuts.
  • Comes with stylus but you’ll never really need to use it.
  • Up to 16 GB of additional storage with an external microSD card but I am sure its rare to use this.
  • Built -in Bluetooth v2.1 & Wi-Fi 802.11b/g connectivity.
  • Support for Nokia Messaging service.
  • Standard 3.5mm Audio Jack with TV-out supporting (PAL/NTSC) standards.
  • 5 Megapixel Carl Zeiss Camera is good enough to take sharp photos, supporting widescreen mode. There’s a Dual LED Flash too which is pretty ‘okay-okay’

  • Camera has a lens Protector with no electronic  part & N900 has a inbulit sensor for detecting lens cover.
  • In-built Accelerometer for motion-sensing – used in games.
  • In-built Proximity Sensor to disable the touchscreen during calls.
  • Lots of  transitions effect in UI everywhere- Thanks to OpenGL ES 2.0.
  • Kickstand for enjoying movies.

  • Maemo browser powered by Mozilla technology support Adobe Flash™ 9.4 – handles any website with full screen browsing, So no “Mobile Version” websites.
  • Charging indicator goes GREEN when battery if Full- So +1 for going Eco friendly.
  • And yes we love this one- Video playback file format supports: .mp4, .avi, .wmv, .3gp; codecs: H.264, MPEG-4, Xvid, WMV, H.263

What we didn’t like :

  • The Size of the Nokia N900. It’s TOO big- we experience problem while driving and keeping it in our Jeans pocket.
  • Screen is fingerprint magnet, needs regular cleaning.
  • The Qwerty Keyboard on the N900 is a tiny & bit cramped compared to Nokia N97 , People with large thumb better watch it!

  • Nokia N900 is not one hand device, even the OS Maemo 5 UI is not designed to be used One-handed.
  • N900 has Nokia Ovi Maps but- No updates yet  and  doesn’t support Navigation & online Synchronization.
  • In normal mode side volume key works in landscape mode where in all Nokia device it works in portrait mode.

So thats all in our first impression on Nokia N900, Getting ready to diagnose the N900 in our upcoming review. So stay tuned and if you have any queries about N900- just shoot it in your comments.

Symbian I think you need to know and use the lot of advantages that maemo brings under the hood, like you said, it´s awesome! i´m a s60 5th user and comparing maemo against s60, I think it just so behind s60, so try your best and impress us!

i was considering this mobile. but i had doubts about support from Nokia. do u think that there will be more devices on maemo (not meego). nokia has released an f/w update now. But what abt applications will there be support from the developer community. are there any takers and how popular is this platfrom among the developers?

going thru reviews and forums, i decided otherwise and didnt choose N900. whats ur thoughts on this?

Currently Nokia is engaged with Intel to bring the MeeGo OS in upstream & looks like that its a bit harder for Nokia to bring Maemo 5 to other devices. MeeGo has already in the News for time being. Considering Developers part- Mameo being a Linux OS has lots of applications and gripping up the developers.

My opinion- I am going to wait for MeeGo to launch.

Both Maemo & Symbian are best of the World. Yes Maemo do has lots of new functionalities that make it Powerful. but you can't neglect the Usability of Symbian OS.

It's indeed a powerful mobile. I reviewed this last year around the same time I got my n97, for me, the n97 wa beter for my needs. But I do keep an eye on Maemo/MeeGo. There's some good stuff in the pipeline there.

  • abraham
